A Southern Grace: i'm not peter piper...

June 2, 2009

i'm not peter piper...

Yum

...but I did pickle some peppers.

I dill-pickled 'em, to be exact.

This endeavor was triggered by a pickling post I recently saw on The Kitchn and my never-ending love for dilly beans.

Here's what I did:
-I capped, seeded, and de-veined a huge bag full of peppers. Important note: Wash your hands thoroughly after doing this, even if you naively think the peppers are mild and in no way hot. [Heed my words. I (and my left eyeball) learned this the hard way.]
-I prepared the
brine recipe perfected by my Mamoxicillan, and heated it to its boiling point.
-I covered the peppers in the brine and left them in the fridge for two days so everyone could meet and get to know each other. (You could certainly can them if you'd like.)

Yes indeedly, pickled peppers please my palate, even if Peter Piper didn't pick a peck for me.

I'm so into pickling now too! They look great, I love nibbling on pickles plus they're better for you than sweets when you're feeling peckish!

I am a pepper-holic. Eat them with my eggs almost every day.
Must try this one, as I love pickled eggs. Do you like pickled eggs?

I can't count the amount of times I have thrown away contact lenses because of mishandling peppers. I know have plastic gloves near the kitchen that I always use.

Woohhh, I never pickle anymore... well not since I was like five and opened a big bad of pickling lime in my eye and had to where an eye patch for two weeks, so consider your eye experience lucky.

tasty - I had a girlfriend a long time ago named jennifer and I brought jars of this stuff (similar but not exactly- pickled hot peppers) to her house early on and her mom called it 'jenny bait'

You're so cute, and I'm glad you pickled those peppers- they sound so addictive and remind me of my mothers' pickled peppers and spicy dills! My mouth is watering just looking at your pictures!

We just polished off the last jar of my dilly beans. These pickled peppers look like they would be just the thing to eat until I can 'can' some more beans. Yum- good thinking Grace!

These pickled peppers are probably perfectly pleasing to the most pickiest pepper eater.

Great looking pickled peppers - I love the colors...I know the pain your left eye experienced, it's baaad news!

A great thing to try when we have peppers running out of our ears this summer!

My mom makes sweet pickles. I guess some people call them bread and butter? But I think that's a dumb name.

Have you seen everything Smitten Kitchen pickles? Even grapes!

Juliana said...

This a really nice way to keep them "fresh". Love the colors...yummie!

I've never pickled anything but now I'm craving these on top of a grilled cheese sandwich. Is that weird?

I'm sniffing a new event called Pick a Peck with how many ways can you use pickled peppers. I would put them in everything - right up there on my "I love this" chart.

Very creative way to introduce your recipe. I love it!

I've been thinking I might be a piper or something. In my old age (heee...) I've been more interested in things like this as long as they're not too sweet. Then I could slather it all over everything like boigahs and grilled snawsages...Mmmm...

Paula said...

I want to pickle a peck of peppers! :-) I thank you and your left eye for passing on the tip about washing hands! Seriously, tho, I would love to pickle peppers! They look lovely!
