I can cook. I can bake. I cannot, for the life of me, make a decent pancake or waffle from a mix.

I lose sleep over this fact, especially since they are two breakfast items that my husband loves. Happily, toaster waffles exist, and even more happily, Eggo® Waffles now have colors and flavors from natural sources! That's a change I appreciate and enthusiastically share with you (and the lady standing in front of the frozen waffle section at Walmart, debating her choices...).

Making hybrid foods seems to be all the rage, and since a donut and a croissant can team up so beautifully, it makes sense that combining a donut and a waffle would make a dazzling creation. The method is simple, especially if you're using Eggo® Minis Waffles. Just toast up the waffles and get creative! You can dip them in melted butter then roll them around in cinnamon sugar (my personal favorite), you can drizzle or coat them with a chocolate glaze (don't forget the sprinkles!), or, if you're feeling frisky, you can make a maple glaze and top them with crumbled bacon! Other ideas include a simple dusting of powdered sugar, peanut butter icing with mini chocolate chips, chocolate with smashed almonds, or vanilla icing covered with a blizzard of coconut.

The possibilities are absolutely endless.

These waffles are, of course, delicious with just a shmear of butter and a drizzle of maple syrup, but when you can have this much fun with your breakfast, you absolutely should! I think this would be a fabulous thing to serve a group of kids the morning after a sleepover, or even adult overnight guests. You can have several glazes and toppings available so your visitors can pick exactly what they want on their waffle donuts. That's my kind of breakfast bar!

You can easily find all of the ingredients for this recipe at Walmart, and because I like you, here's a special Ibotta offer that will earn you $2 when you purchase ONE Eggo® Breakfast Sandwich, Bacon or Sausage varieties only, 8 ct. box only at Walmart.

Waffle Donuts
(printable recipe)
Makes 10 servings
Ingredients:
  • 1 box Eggo® Minis Waffles
Cinnamon sugar coating:
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
Maple glaze:
  • 1-1/2 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • A few drops of maple flavoring
  • Cooked bacon, crumbled
Chocolate glaze:
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 2 teaspoons vegetable shortening
  • Sprinkles, optional
Cereal milk glaze:
  • 1-1/2 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 2 tablespoons cereal milk (made using this method, but halved)
  • Cereal flakes, crumbled
Directions:
Prepare the waffles as directed, then remove to a cooling rack.
Cinnamon sugar coating: In a small bowl, combine the granulated sugar and cinnamon for the coating. Dip the cooled waffle into the melted butter, let the excess drip off, then dip into the cinnamon sugar mixture, rolling to coat.
Maple glaze: Whisk together the ingredients for the maple glaze (except the bacon) until no lumps remain. Dip as many waffles as desired into the glaze. Garnish with crumbled bacon.
Chocolate glaze: In another bowl, melt chocolate and shortening and stir until smooth. Dip desired amount of waffles into the chocolate and add the sprinkles.
Cereal milk glaze: Add the cereal milk to the powdered sugar and stir to combine. Dip your waffle into the glaze, then top with crumbled cereal.

Oh Grace, this sound so much fun, I am loving the idea of many glazes...and I like the small size of waffles...therefore I can try all glazes.
