A Southern Grace: it's that time again...

October 18, 2010

it's that time again...

Yum

Yep, the pumpkin goodies are out in force.

Here we have yet another example of the growth of my palate (not the roof of the mouth, of course--that'd just be weird--but the whole sense of taste thing) since I've openly declared my distaste for the ubiquitous orange orb in the past. Things, they are a-changin'.

These muffins are awesome. I'll be honest--I think the simple fact that cinnamon* is the prevalent flavor has a lot to do with my high opinion of them. Heck, for all I know, I may still hate pumpkin itself, but the combination of pumpkin and cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg is a winner.

*Speaking of cinnamon, have you seen this? Hilarious.

What's next? Pumpkin pie? Pumpkin cookies? Pumpkin flan? Soup? Profiteroles? Challah? Pancakes? Fudge? I've seen 'em all, and I can't decide. What's your favorite (cinnamon-containing) pumpkin product?

Purdy Pumpkin Muffins
2 cups sugar
2/3 cup oil
1/3 cup buttermilk
3 large eggs
1 (16-oz) can (2 cups) pumpkin puree
3 cups all purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup coarsely chopped walnuts
1 cup golden raisins

Preheat oven to 375°F. Line muffin tin.
Combine the sugar and oil in large bowl to blend; mix in the eggs and pumpkin.
Sift flour, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, baking soda, salt and baking powder into another large bowl; stir into the pumpkin mixture. Mix in the walnuts and raisins.
Divide the batter equally into the cups.
Bake until tester inserted into center comes out clean, about 18-20 minutes.

I also used to severely dislike the pumpkin - but I did thoroughly enjoy some pumpkin, cinnamon and nutmeg scones I made - it seems to become tastier when baked into sweet treats like your muffins

Those look so good! I love pumpkin bread and muffins. Strangely, I don't like pumpkin pie. I think there's just not enough spice for me.

I've got a pumpkin recipe on my to-do list for next week. I prefer it in sweets myself. I like cinnamon in pretty much everything. It's one of those go-to spices for me.

Your muffins looks super yummy!

I don't usually like pumkin =S Although there a few exceptions to that in certain dishes (usually where the pumkin taste is masked by something else) haha.....
I haven't had any pumkin sweet things before, but your muffins actually sound and look really good! (actually, they don't look like pumkin muffins at all!) It's definitely because of the cinnamon =)

I love savoury pumpkin stuff - soup, roasted etc but must say that it's not the first flavour I think off when choosing a sweet. This muffin I could definitely go for. And who knew you can't swallow a tablespoon of cinnamon, not srue I needed to know that, but hopefully it'll come in handy some day.

Those are purdy! Miss D. just asked to make something pumpkin a few days ago--this just might fit the bill! Thanks!

I love anything pumkin Grace, so your muffins look amazing to me. And yes, cinnamon has to be present with the pumpkin to be totally delicious! Great job with these muffins; I'm now craving them!

I like pumpkin things. Muffins are definitely near the top, along with pumpkin bread. Pumpkin soup always sounds like a good idea too though I've never made it myself.

I bought some pumpkin fudge for my dearly beloved, and he is NOT sharing. So it must be good. I put a ton of cinnamon and nutmeg and cloves in my pumpkin pie, so I think you'd like it. I saw a recipe for pumpkin rice pudding last week, and I have sort of a yen for it now...Maybe after I make some muffins.

Welcome to the pumpkin club! These muffins look fantastic. Some personal faves of mine are pumpkin cinnamon rolls, pumpkin flan, and pumpkin pancakes. I do love pumpkin!

The pumpkin butterscotch muffins on my blog are the best EVAR. It's such a great pairing! But I might have to give these a shot, too. (Just not pie. I do not like pumpkin pie. Ewy.)

And the cinnamon thing. I seriously don't get it.

Rhondi said...

I'm just now getting my feet wet with pumpkin too. I would like to make these when my grocery store gets some canned pumpkin in stock. These look so moist and delicious!

Cara said...

Even if you disliked pumpkin completely, I'd still be your friend. But since you like it, we can be better friends :) I love using pumpkin in savory dishes like my creamy pumpkin pasta sauce (made with cottage cheese!) and pumpkin chili.

Pumpkin pie isn't my favorite either- I'd rather have sweet potato any day. But those muffins? They look really scrumptious. My favorite pumpkin "thing" so far has to have been a pumpkin swirl cheesecake with a Pecan Sandies crust that my niece made for Thanksgiving dinner a few years back. She did not share the recipe. :(

It IS that time of year. It's crazy how fast this year has gone by. But I am ready -- more than ready -- for some good pumpkin treats. Bring 'em on! ;)

Grace...your Purdy muffins sound scrumptious! Of course...it's gotta be due to the fact that your favourite spice is heightening the whole treat ;O)

It's a toss up for me between cookies and muffins with squash...luv em both!

Ciao for now,
Claudia

Nutmeg Nanny said...

Hooray you are starting to love pumpkin :) The addition of cinnamon and other warm spices helps a lot too.

These do look very "purdy"!

I've never been that crazy about pumpkin either; maybe an occasional piece of my mom's pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving, but that's about it.

I love muffins and I LOVE cinnamon on just about anything. The Vietnamese Cinnamon from Penzey's is the best!

I'll have to try these when I finally decide that I'm in a baking mood.

I am loving all the pumpkin recipes out there right now but I would be thrilled to share something right out of your kitchen.

Glad you found a pumpkin thing to love. :) My fiance says he doesn't like pumpkin things yet likes the pumpkin muffins I make... and then we determined that it's pumpkin pie he doesn't like! My favourite pumpkin baked good... maybe pumpkin bread/loaf. Pumpkin cheesecake is really good too! And I saw a recipe for pumpkin bagels that I really want to try.

A Plum By Any Other Name said...

Agreed. The "pumpkin pie spices" are some of my favorites. Pumpkin profiteroles? Brilliant! Now, I had some delicious profiteroles in Paris last week ... and I DO have some sweet potato ice cream left in my freezer ... hmm.

I don't need convincing that pumpkin and cinnamon is great together. Now hand over some muffins!
