A Southern Grace: enough already!

October 8, 2008

enough already!

Yum

You may be growing tired of my (over)use of apples and cinnamon and if so, sorry. I can't seem to get enough.

When I saw this post about apple chips on eat make read, I knew exactly what was in store for the apples I had just gotten from work. We've been testing different varieties in some of our products, so I thought I'd do my own little experiment and see whether Gala or Golden Delicious yielded the better apple chip.

I followed the procedure closely. Apparently I'm not very adept with a knife, as my slices weren't that impressively thin. In fact, some were downright obese. The only change I made was to--wait for it--sprinkle cinnamon on top before popping them into the oven.

So which apple variety reigned supreme? Although I put the slices on different baking sheets, I ultimately couldn't distinguish between the varieties based solely on appearance. Taste was a different story--I greatly preferred the Golden Delicious, which just so happens to be my favorite fresh apple as well. They were much sweeter, and lacked the somewhat bitter aftertaste I found in the Gala slices.

These are an easy, yummy snack, chock-full of crispity, crunchity satisfaction. Don't take my word for it--after all, I do have a slight obsession with all things cinnamon. Go ahead and try 'em for yourself.

Neat idea to make your own apple chips, and don't worry... I'm obsessed with cinnamon too :)

Haha I wouldn't complain about your apples and cinnamon as I love them too! I tried making something like these about 20 years ago, I even liked dried fruit so much that I bought a food dryer (which hasn't been touched for about 19 years along with the exercise bike and treadmill...).

Too many apples?
You know what they say...
An apple a day!

That is a brilliant idea! I don't care how many apple-cinnamon posts you put up--I'm drooling over all of them.

Sick of apples and cinnamon?? Never! And I loove apple chips!

Leslie said...

I am soooo going to have to make these. I love apple chips and have never thought of making them myself!

Of course we knew that cinnamon would make it in there somewhere. I love apple chips - my only complaint is that a gazillion apples make one ziplock of chips.

Alicia Foodycat said...

There is no way you can overuse apple & cinnamon! It is October FFS - it is compulsory!

Bring on those apple & cinnamon they are so good & cinnamon is good for you too!

Never ever too much apples. Ever. Especially since you are in upstate NY and get the very best. I'd love to make my own apple chips. I'm also obsessed with honeycrisp apples, having tried them for the first time at the farmer's market in Fairport,NY along the Eerie canal. I pay almost $3 a lb for them-that's the state of my obsession. I even have the kids hooked.

Not nearly enough!! Bring them on ;-)

I actually really like apples so I'm super happy you keep posting on them. These chips look really interesting and I may have to give them a try!

too many apples? What? Impossible. Fall is just beginning, bring on the appley onslaught!

I'll never get sick of apples or cinnamon! And I keep thinking I need to invest in a mandoline, because my slicing skills aren't that great, either!

Your house must have smelled simply wonderful from baking these apple chips!

We tried a new apple variety this week in the Inn Cuisine household: Honey Crisp.

For all I know, Honey Crisp apples are old hat for some people, but they were new to us. Didn't particularly taste like honey, but they were mighty crisp and in a word, delicious.

I'm going to have to try some golden delicious. They're my Mom's favorites, so I don't know why I've always gone for braeburn or gala. I can smell these baking already!

You made your own! I have only pigged out on the ones from Amazon (the organic apple crisps) or whatever they call it.
Never even occured to make my own. What a neat idea!

Don't worry, I just made a HUGE cinnamony apple crisp so I'm not quite tired of apples yet. It is Fall, after all! I love the idea of apple chips, the kids would sure get a kick out of them. :)

Sick of apples? At this time of year? No way...keep em comin' I would love to try these chips-will they stop me from eating Lays?

I think I'm obsessed with cinnamon as well... actually I just used up the last of what I had on apple butter! So I'd better make a run to the store so I can try these with my leftover apples from the orchard :)

Putting cinnamon on something only makes it better. These look great. The only way I get really thin slices is by using my mandolin, so don't feel bad about your knife skills.

Lisa said...

Those apple chips are beautiful and I'm sure the cinnamon can only make them better! It is good stuff and it's gotten to where every time I put a heaping tablespoon of cinnamon into a recipe, and that's pretty often, I think of you.

Grace do you think these would be good in cereal?? I've never made dried apples before but that's the first think I thought of ...oh I bet they would be!

La Bella Cooks said...

I buy apple chips all the time but never even think to make them myself. How hard can it be, right? Yours look like they turned out perfectly.
