...but I was wrong.
Yep, contrary to popular belief, I'm not always right. When I heard of a drink called a Michelada consisting of beer mixed with tomato juice (among other things), I was convinced it'd be among the grossest things ever created. My brave boyfriend was very eager to try it, so I searched out a reliable recipe, first looking to Bobby Flay. I went on to find recipes using every possible ratio of beer to tomato juice, but ended up using equal parts.
The salted rim, refreshing lime juice, and spicy hot sauce all worked together really well, truth be told. The final product was got two thumbs up from my boyfriend (who also tried Bobby Flay's ratio and didn't like it as well), and it was super easy to make. I read that folks in Mexico like to have this as a hangover cure, and I can see how that would work. Treat the effects of alcohol with more alcohol! All in all, this is an interesting and surprisingly tasty beverage.
Michelada (aka Mexican Bloody Mary)(aka Bloody Maria)
Makes 8 drinks
Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon coarse salt, to rim the glasses
- 4 cups tomato juice
- 32 ounces chilled Mexican beer
- 1/2 cup fresh lime juice
- 1-1/2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon hot sauce (such as Tabasco)
- Lime wedges
Directions:
Rub the rim of the glasses with some lime juice and then dip the rims in the salt mixture.
Mix tomato juice, beer, lime juice, Worcestershire sauce, and hot sauce in a large pitcher.
Fill glasses with ice, add Michelada mixture, and garnish with lime wedges.

You are right, it sounds gross... But I'm sure it tastes lovely nonetheless!
Cheers,

That is very interesting - they are on the menu at my favourite Mexican restaurant, and I give the menu side-eye every time I go because that just canNOT be tasty! And yet you say it is. And I trust you... I will have to have a go.
Well, for once, I'm not going to be with you. I dislike beer intensely. It was a real problem in my youth, believe me...everyone drank beer except me. Still.....this was fascinating. I'll hang in and wait for the real Bloody Mary.
Oh what brave souls you are to try such a drink, Grace. I'm not sure I would but as someone else said, if you say it's good, then, I would be willing to give a sip:) That Mexican Beer is my very best favorite!!!
Thank you so much for sharing, Grace...
Of course look delicious Grace:))
cheers!
Beer and tomato juice? wow...what a fun drink!
This sounds amazing. I like Bloody Marys, I like beer, I like beer cocktails. WIN WIN.
In the past I would have never ever wanted to drink this. But in the past year I've grown to love bloody mary's and tomato juice. I want this realll bad.
My grampy would call treating hangover with more alcohol "the hair of the dog that bit you." It's really a pretty drink, but I'm no fan of beer. Still, I bet there are a lot of people who would love it.
I love tomato juice so I am sure I would love this one as well!
I trust you and your taste buds, but before reading what you thought of this, I would have said "no way"! I will try it if I find it offered sometime when we are out :)
I had a michelada for the first time a few months ago too and loved it! But i think if you like bloody mary's this would be right up your alley! Sounds easy enough to make at home.
I love these! I always put beer in my bloody marys! Delicious:)
