Savory scones almost always look so drab.
Even if you get crazy and add scallions, they're still basically white or dark orange inside brown upon brown around beige. Blah.
Here's how the genesis of this creation occurred: I was staring despondently at my cheese choices, pondering a way to spruce up my latest batch of scones. As is my wont, I was drawn to the pepper jack. I noticed that this particular log of cheese didn't have as many flecks of pepper bits as usual, and I suddenly wondered why I didn't just add peppers of my own. What can I say, folks--you just can't hold this gal down!
The roasted red peppers add color, kick, and, it's important to note, a little extra juice. Be careful that you don't wind up with wet dough and therefore a flat, sad scone. Don't skip the cayenne, either--it's not a huge amount, but you'll notice it, and you'll appreciate it.

Salty and Spicy Scones
Makes 8
Ingredients:
- 1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 6 tablespoons butter, cold and cubed
- 2/3 cup milk
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 cup pepper jack cheese, shredded or chopped
- 1/2 cup bacon, cooked to crispy and chopped
- 1/2 cup roasted red peppers, chopped and blotted dry
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Combine the dry ingredients and cut in the butter until a coarse, crumbly mixture is formed.
Mix in the milk, beaten egg, cheese, bacon, and peppers using a fork just until everything is moistened and then turn the batter out onto a floured surface.
Form into an 8-inch wide disk.
Apply an egg wash and sprinkle with salt and pepper, then cut the round into 8 wedges.
Transfer to a baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes.

Lovely scones and great giveaway (I love Novica - don't count me in though... ;-) ).
cheers,
Rosa
Good idea. I sometimes prefer savory scones to sweet, but I do agree that they can look drab. Not these, though!
With ingredients like these, I don't care what color these scones are! YUM!
That is one beautiful scone! Great way to spice it up.
I'm beginning to think this is the year of the savories, scones and muffins that is. I just came frm Mary's and she baked savory muffins and here I visit you and you are serving "colorful" peppered scones. I'm in heaven!
Thank you so much for sharing, Grace...
P.S. Will you be joining us for the Picnic Game this year? I suppose I would have to say my favorite color at the moment is Kermit Green:) (if you visit my blog you'll know why:)
Some day I will try to make scones. I think I'll start basic first, and then make something exciting like yours.
savory scones YUM, these little bad boys look delish. Scone I always think sweet, breakfast or tea time never savory. They do look wonderful.
Favorite color: I'm obsessed now with stark white and Aegean Blue. I found these colors in a throw I got for my bed had to get it can't have too many throws LOL. It's very Santorini, Greece a place I've dreamed of visiting. That blue makes my heart flutter with happiness.
Yummy looking scones! Great giveaway! I love emerald green! It's my birthstone!

What a lovely scone (and I think it looks quite delicious...not drab at all!) As for my favorite color? Green! Thank you for sharing!
I love scones! Savory or sweet. But do agree about drab. Fruit always makes a difference and the sugar baked on top helps their appearance, but you've come up with a great idea for savory scones. The salt and pepper on top is exactly the right touch, Grace. Love the pepper jack, bacon and red pepper additions.
my favorite color is blue!

I love the pop of color the peppers give to these tasty looking scones.
My favorite color is sage green.
Yum! Sometimes, delicious food is bland looking. Vanilla ice cream, creme brulee, rice pudding. Scones are another! I love a savoury scone, and this combination sounds awesome!
These scones look simply perfect my friend :)
Simple can definitely mean delicious!
Cheers

You should NEVER be held down so long as it means you'll keep on creating savory scone deliciousness like this!
I love scones :) These look great!
I do like a savoury scone and I totally agree, they are so, so, brown! Good job with the pepper "pop" :)
I love scones - sweet or savory - and I must say this one looks delicious...albeit with a bit of a kick most likely! ;-) I'm enjoying my second cup of coffee and wishing I could have one right now.
Sorry - I forgot to tell you my favorite color! It's GREEN - all shades of green...
I love aqua!

Favorite color? Yellow. For several years I didn't love it as much but now I'm back to having it as my favorite. I may not wear it a lot or have walls painted that color but a touch of yellow in a room can make it like sunshine on the worst dreary day.
Favorite color - aqua.

I have never had a savory scone but these look like a great way to start. My oldest is our scone-maker and I think I'll try to entice her into baking again with this recipe!
