A Southern Grace: oreo shmoreo

oreo shmoreo

Yum

I have a confession: I don't really like Oreos. If I could just lick scrape out the innards and pass the dry, grainy cookie part off to someone else, that'd be peachy keen with me.

So what was I to do with a little bottle of Oreo pieces meant to be used as an ice cream mix-in? Huh?

Here's what I, Queen of Imagination Lackers, did--I got a box of Oreo pudding mix, fed Eb, and knocked out some miniature muffins using the recipe that has now pretty much earned a permanent spot in my memory bank.

Chocolate goo? Check. Cream goo? Check check.

The flavor of the Oreos was actually quite subtle, which suited me just fine. The little breadlets were moist and faintly twangy from the sourdough and just sweet enough to justify eating them for breakfast or dessert.

Bella approves.

I do declare, this recipe just wins.

SourDOUGH OreO Muffins(oh)
1/2 cup oil
1/2 cup applesauce
1/2 cup milk
1 cup sourdough starter
3 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup sugar
2 cups flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 (5.1 oz) box instant Oreo pudding mix
1 cup Oreo pieces

Preheat oven to 325F. Grease down whatever molds you intend to use (I filled up 4 mini loaves and one miniature muffin tin).
In a large bowl, mix the oil, applesauce, eggs, milk, starter, vanilla, and sugar.
In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, baking soda, pudding mix, and cookie pieces. Add this to the liquid mixture and stir thoroughly.
Pour the batter into the prepared pans and bake until done. This took around 45 minutes for my mini loaves and about 30 minutes for the muffins.

I've never liked Oreos either, Grace. And because of that, never even knew oreo pudding mix existed. (I have GOT to start looking in that pudding section!) You've come up with an interesting muffin/bread. The addition of applesauce is intriguing. Does it help make them moist and gooey?
And I disagree: anyone who could come up with this recipe has a LOT of imagination! ;)

Gotta agree on the lack of oreo love. However, there are exceptions. I LOVE making truffles out of them. Then you've got all the chocolate and goo all smooshed together and surrounded in chocolate. The mint double stuffs make the best truffles. Just in case you need to know. : )

LyB said...

You certainly don't lack imagination! I wouldn't have thought to use Oreo bits in a muffin recipe but I know a few kiddos who'd surely appreciate it. ;) Lookin' good!

Kate at Serendipity said...

Well, I can't even GET Oreos where I live, let alone Oreo pudding mix. What will they come up with next?? Something that you can use to make another wonderful recipe, I KNOW that! These look delicious. Thanks for posting this.

Hey Grace, I agree with you on Oreos. Why get all that black stuff in your teeth! The only time I buy them is to put them into Barefoot Contessa's Outrageous Brownies for our annual SPCA Bake Sale! This recipe looks awesome though; I'm tempted to get some sourdough starter going!

Dena said...

The recipe sounds wonderful. I somehow had a bag of oreo pudding appear and I mixed it in a cake just to get rid of it. Nobody complained, which I consider a success.

Oreos are ok, but I think I'd love them much better hanging out in these muffins! These look gooey delicious, which is a good thing; now I'd like a couple(or more) to go with my coffee!
You're so creative! :)

I've never liked oreos either. I didn't even know there was an oreo pudding mix.

So glad to hear about Eb again! Looks like he did a great job here. I have to try these sourdough muffins.

shaz said...

Same here! Oreos aren't my thing - although do you get those chocolate covered stick ones (that are pretending to be KitKats)? This muffin-o certainly puts those bits to good use :) (I so need an Eb in my life).

Love these muffins Grace. The kids really love Oreos, I love with Ice Cream but I think really you are so smart!!Your muffins look georgeous, xgloria

I have a confession-I don't really like Oreos either! I think it was because we'd always see them on tv here and we wouldn't be able to try them so I raised them to an almost mythical status which came crashing down when I tried one :P

Palidor said...

They look great! I'm not fond of the cookie part either.

♥peachkins♥ said...

Well, I am a nutcase..I don't like the oreo filling, the creamy white one? what I want is the bitter dry cookie..hee

Peter M said...

So, are you trying to say Oreos wouldn't be apart of your last supper? ;)

Melleah said...

What a great idea to get the Oreo flavor in a "moister" way. I agree, the cookie part of an Oreo is awfully dry-- unless I have a glass of milk to dunk those cookies in or its Oreo ice cream, I pass on them.

Pam said...

I am not a huge fan of oreos either. The muffins do look moist and delicious.

Ingrid_3Bs said...

I don't like Oreos either except when they are mixed in to something else and it can't be a whole bunch. Like you said just a subtle taste.

As a child I lived on Oreos! That looks absolutely delish!

Lindsey@pickyeatings said...

I actually do like oreos...not really sure why, they're not THAT great. But oreo pudding mix? Who knew there was such a thing?!

Albany Jane said...

Yum! I love soaking them in milk. Plain = I'll pass. Way too dry. The mint ones are pretty good, too. At first it's a little toothpaste-y, but then - Mama.

Hungry Dog said...

I like Oreos but I understand how you might find them full. Homemade Oreos could be delicious though. Anyway, your muffins look so cute--and I LOVE the phot of your kitty checking one out.

If your cat Bella approves, then it's a go :)

Delicious! Oreos are cute little cookies...

Melanie said...

Let's hear it for goo. These sound and look delicious. Glad the sweet feline approved!

Katie said...

I only like the middle too. If I have to eat oreos they better be double stuf otherwise why bother. These look great!

Lisa-Marie said...

I love Oreo's for the same reason that I like American chocolate. Oreo's don't taste like the biscuits here, and Amereican chocolate doesn't taste like chocolate to me. They are still something good in themseles though, and what you have produced looks like heaven in a cupcake ase to me!!!

kimberleyblue said...

What a good idea! Now I won't get in trouble anymore for picking out the middles from the cookies and leaving them in the bag!

vanillasugarblog said...

I stay farrrr away from the whole Oreo thing. I mean those mint Oreo's are frigging killer. So bad for you, but oh so good all crushed up and eaten like cereal, yeah, like cereal. See why I stay away from them. But you have a clever little idea here with the sourdough. Very clever! Have you ever, and I'm thinking you might have, eaten slices of sourdough bread dipped in dark choco? Huh?

Marjie said...

You've done some wondrous stuff with that sourdough muffin idea. I'm no fan of Oreos, either, because I don't like chocolate flavored foods, and I'm not wild about the cream. But I know my kids would go for these in a big way.

you got me at oreo. as a child I never got to get oreos but i love making things with oreo in them now. Thanks for this.

Unknown said...

Oreos are only good dipped till mushy in milk or incorporated into something like you did, Grace. Those are some delicious looking muffins!

Stout Ideas said...

Yum!! I love oreos though :) And you are so flippin creative!

Unknown said...

I <3 Double Stuff Oreos!! but i have to have them with a glass of milk for dipping...makes the cookie part all soggy and yummy LOL. Great muffin!

Half Baked said...

I totally agree. I love the chocolate but HATE that grainy white stuff in the center of oreos! However those muffins look amazing!

Robin said...

Grace you lack nothing! This is very creative of you to make this AND feed Eb! Oreos should be all center.

La Cuisine d'Helene said...

I love oreos but especially the outside. This looks good.

Bunny said...

Oreo Pudding!! I have to look for that! Well you and Eb have done it again, your a great team you two. These looks fantastic, I especially love the gooo part!

I hate that the cookie part gets stuck in my teeth. This is a great way to fix that problem. My kitty has a sweet tooth just like your baby.

LilSis said...

My husband loves Oreos, but unfortunately I don't buy them for him anymore. He's so deprived, he would think he had died and gone to Heaven if I made these muffins for him!! I bet these are amazing!

i only like oreos with milk and nothing else!
and omg bella! so cute. love that picture. haha.
sounds like a good recipe!

Jessica said...

Ohmigosh these look really good. I am not a huge oreo fan but my husband is. I am making him an oreo dessert this wknd but these look like I need to make them NOW.

I am not an Oreo fan...I like homemade cookies! Love your creation though!

Oreo muffins? What a great way to get Oreo flavor without the nasty Oreo dryness. Snaps to you, kitchen genius!

Lisa said...

Interesting recipe, Grace! I'd rather eat the cream than the cookie part too. If not for the things I mash them into I wouldn't buy Oreos either. Here's one more reason to make space for them in the cupboard.

Laura said...

I'm still trying to get past the beginning, the part where you (gasp!) say you don't like oreos. That's my cannot have it in the house will eat the whole box processed food problem. :) But it does sound like you, at any rate, might agree the double stuffs are better, which most people think I'm crazy for. And when ice cream only uses the cookie part? BLECH! Hello, an oreo is an oreo because of the cream in the middle!

The muffins look fabulous. We're starting the season out behind (hello still finishing The Closer from summer!) but have watched the first ep of Fringe. Did you watch FastForward? That's on our list for this weekend....

Kerstin said...

What a great idea, they look delicious! I'm actually a big Oreo fan and can't bring them home because they're too addicting!

Chef Jeena said...

These little delights are so up my street! I love the stickiness of the top and moisture of the cake, lovely!

By the way I am the same with oreos. :-)

Jacque said...

There's someone that doesn't like Oreos on this planet? (faints)

There's such a thing as oreo pudding mix?

These are things I can not fathom, LOL.

Your muffins look wonderful. Good old reliable eb... such a nice starter.

Jessica@Foodmayhem said...

You don't like oreos? I don't even comprehend.

Leslie said...

ahhhh.I love the kitty nose!!!

Hornsfan said...

Mighty fine use of Oreos, can't complain but seriously, you don't like them on their own??? Not even with milk?? Grace, I'm shocked!

Paula said...

Oh my gosh, I soooo adore the title of this. I'm not an oreo fan, but if I had to choose, I'd prefer the filling over the wafer. I would, though, have no qualms about eating one of these muffins. WHO knew there even was such a thing as oreo pudding? Not I!! And then there's the whole creativity thing of using them in a muffin recipe! Sigh, I envy your brain. Eb did good here!

Sweet_Tooth said...

This is SO creative!!! Way to turn an oreo aversion into an unexpected treat.

& Thanks for the comment, glad to hear you're a cool runnings fan!!

Anonymous said...

Very creative use of oreos! I don't usually eat the cookies (I like them but it's just not a snack of choice these days) but I do love ice cream shakes with oreos in them. I know I would just love these muffins too!

Amanda said...

Good gosh, Oreo pudding mix?

Very interesting. The muffins looks great, I'm a sucker for ANYTHING sourdough. Must be the reason I moved to San Francisco.

Love your blog.

Oh man, I love Oreos!

These muffins look like pure deliciousness. Fabulous idea.

I have never seen Oreo cookine pudding here in Canada, but then again I haven't been looking. Will have to keep my eyes open in Seattle.

RecipeGirl said...

Oreo pudding??? Guess I've gotta go searching for that. I've never liked oreos either- they simply work well in stuff (like brownies). They look pretty good in these muffins too!

I actually like the vanilla oreos better than the classic. I'm more of a vanilla gal ;)

Juliana said...

I like Oreo cookies once in a while, but haven't heard of oreo pudding...nevertheless, your muffins look so yummie, moist a full of flavor.

Sandie said...

I'll take your Oreo crust cast-offs (in fact I prefer them to the white filling--I know---gasp!). I had no idea there was such a thing as Oreo pudding. Guess I'm going to have to cruise the pudding section of my local grocer a bit more thoroughly :)

Too bad you couldn't ship me a portion of Eb, I could use a good sourdough starter.

Heather said...

man. every girl needs a man like eb in her life. he's so reliable and always produces something good. i'd trade nick for eb any day ;)

Jaime said...

LOL i love that last photo! i can't believe you don't love oreos! *gasp*

OOOOOOOO HELLO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd never have guessed you didn't like Oreos! Maybe if they came up with a cinnamon variation, you'd reconsider? :P

And oooh, I wish we had Oreo pudding mix here!

Lele said...

Totally with you on the filling trumping Oreos. I feel the same way about Pop Tarts. Have you ever made Alton Brown's homemade pop tarts? They are FAB, and it makes such a difference when the cookie/crust layer tastes good too!

Chats the Comfy Cook said...

You are the solver of foodie problems. This is a great solution for those pesty Oreos. It is amazing how many people don't like them.

I loved them as a kid but I licked out the filling and did something with the cookies and it was not eat them.

Mmmm oreo cupcakes. I prefer the cookie part to the cream part! Love the last photo.

Deborah said...

I like oreos, but I LOVE the middle, which is why I love double stuff oreos! This is a great way to use those oreos!

Teanna said...

Oh man, I LOOOOOOOVE oreos. Like, would eat a whole sleeve if I could do it without getting nauseous and gaining 5 pounds. These muffins are awesome, I love the use of the pudding in the recipe.

Lori said...

While we agree on cinnamon, we so dont agree on Oreos. I was just telling my friends last night that after amking umpteen million desserts, store bought cookies just dont do it for me. Except oreos, especially the mint kind. And I love the cookie.

I actually love oreos! I have never heard of this pudding mix though. Interesting recipe. Looks really good!
