A Southern Grace: clobbered by cobblers

clobbered by cobblers

Yum

Do you ever resolve to make a particular dish, only to find two or three or twelve equally-appealing recipes for it? I do. Often.

Sometimes I simply can't decide which to use, so I just go ahead and make multiple versions. This is one of those times.

I recently found myself with about five quarts of blueberries on my hands and a powerful, no-use-fighting-it, resistance-is-futile craving for cobbler. I have a go-to recipe, as I suspect you all do, but I wanted to find something even better.

Selection B--a hot, sloppy, tasty mess.
Topping of choice: Whipped cream.

I narrowed it down to two recipes. Choice A was that of food blog juggernaut Pioneer Woman, and selection B was an interesting creation that's remarkably similar to this pudding cake that I bookmarked immediately upon seeing.

Choice A--a little cake-ish (with crackly bits along the edges) and a lot delish-ish.
Essential accompaniment: Vanilla ice cream.

The resulting cobblers were remarkably similar, with A having more of a cake-like substance and B providing a wonderful goo-factor. Both were so delicious and perfect that I refuse to pick a winner. Nope. Ain't gonna do it.

I prefer the B version. I like when the cobbler is gooey. Sounds delish with the vanilla ice cream

As long as the A version has crunch on top I vote A. Gotta have that crunch along with the gooey beneath and judging from your photos, A has just that. Vanilla ice cream is an absolute necessity, Grace! (I just know you voted A and wanted us to make up our own minds!)

oneordinaryday said...

Are we voting? Okay then. Of course, I gotta choose B if it's like my pudding cake. That was a-ma-zing!

kat said...

Hmmm, hard to say but thinking I might prefer A

Leslie said...

the goo factor is selling me on this one!

maybelles mom said...

I think thats a win win test. I wouldn't kick either out of bed, so to speak.

I am an equal opportunity cobbler eater. I have no problem eating any version...there is always something about each version that I can find to love!

I am a B cobbler lover, love the goo, the more goo , the better!

I'd have to say it would be hard to choose a winner too. I wouldn't refuse either.

They both look awesome! Why should you have to choose?!

Susan @ SGCC said...

Who could choose! They both look fabulously delicious!

What a delightful situation to be in. Two delicious cobblers to taste test! Both do look great!

Hungry Dog said...

WHy choose when you can have both? Blubeberry cobbler heaven!

Lorraine @ Not Quite Nigella said...

Hehe yes choose both! Although a goo factor always seems to win me over. But then again I'd need to try both to make a fully informed decision ;)

Rebeca said...

Yum yum... I'm a cake fan... but I'd gladly eat both :)

Mmmmm... I LOVE cobbler. And both of these look positively scrumptious!

Oh, I have a weakness for cobbler something fierce! These both look awesome, Grace! I'd probaby have to say I'd like A better...love the texture contrasts. But, when it's drown in ice cream, who cares? he he he

Ooh, thank you thank you for posting the multiples! I usually tend to combine recipes with sometimes mixed results :)

Those look incredible! I've been on a cobbler kick lately, so these will be a nice way to change things up. I'm really liking the sloppy goo mess of option B.

Jennifer said...

I am going to say I would be a fan of B, but both are so yummy looking!

foodhoe said...

yes, I would love a nice big scoop of each with ice cream please.

Sophie said...

hmm...hard to pick which one I like best. But I do loove cake! I am so envious of your blueberry collection!

Karine said...

I love both! They all look delish!

Maris said...

Yes but I also have the opposite problem. A million different recipes to make, not enough time to make them all!

Grace I love clobers, all types and these look specially yummy!!
Love blueberries too..gloria

Lisa said...

They both look great! I tried the Pudding Cake too. I made it with blackberries. We couldn't wait until it set to dig in and there was a definitely a goo factor but, while it wasn't terribly photogenic, it was delicious!

kimberleyblue said...

Both sound delicious - but I'd choose option B if I had to. It looks absolutely packed with blueberries!

Cheri said...

Mmm.. I pick B.. because gooey sounds good right now. :) I always hate it when there are so many good choices for one type of recipe.. I am terrible at making decisions. These both do look so very delicious!

Marjie said...

I used to make cobbler like choice A. Easy and fast. Then one night I made a French cobbler, with just a thin topping, and my guys were hooked. Try it. You'll be really wracked with indecision!

Kerstin said...

Mmm, they both look great - yum!

Southern Grace Gourmet said...

they both look wonderful! great with ice cream!

Lori said...

hmmmmmmm goo. Clearly there are two winners.

Anonymous said...

Wow. And did you get to enjoy them both? Cool! I like version B. Never was a cake person, but gooey? Mmm!

Bunny said...

Grace I'd have to have both, making one on a day when I preferred gooey and one another day when I preferred cakey. It's all good!!

Foodie with Little Thyme! said...

Send me samples of both and I'll be happy to help you decide!
YUM!

Pam said...

They both look mighty tasty to me. I'll take some of each with extra whipped cream please.

Daniel B. said...

"Ain't" sounds suspiciously like "A"

Freudian slip much?

Emily said...

It's a blueberry cobbler throwdown! Yes!
I like B, but they both look delicious.

shaz said...

Mmm..what a great decision to have to make (or not to as the case may be). I'd probably lean towards the crunchy bits.

Dolce said...

Then I guess we will ahve to do both as well... Bummer... :)

Amanda said...

Aaaahahahah, resistance is futile! You kill me, girl!

The cobblers sound wonderful. I know what you mean about finding multiple recipes. I often print out a gaggle of them and lay them out side-by-side, finding the commonalities, the elements I like, and morphing them into one super-recipe.

Albany Jane said...

Excellent tests! They both look good - I'd also be hard pressed to name a superior one.

Paula said...

That title has to be one of the best tongue twisters of all time! I dare you to say it fast 5 times! I would not have to be dared to give this recipe a try. Both sound wonderful, although I am partial to pudding cakes. Awesome photos! YUM!

Julie said...

If I'm going to be clobbered by anything, I want it to be cobblers!
I've made PW's blackberry cobbler (one of them)..and really loved it! Yours looks super :)

Chef Jeena said...

Grace, everytime I visit you I just wish your food was sat on my table infront of me! I love blueberries and this sounds and looks wonderful.

Juliana said...

Yes, so I try to mix and match :-)
Your cobbler looks so yummie, I like the gooey one!

The Blonde Duck said...

I can help you mix and match...

Bill Wang said...

Both options have my mouth watering, I will have to give one a go on baking night!

Chats the Comfy Cook said...

I certainly don't blame you for not choosing a winner. You have two winners. Of course, there is the goo factor.......

Robin said...

You made two cobblers!! You go! I would be huge if I ate all of that, but that doesn't stop me! Hmm which one to pick?

Jennifer said...

Ill eat cobbler both ways!! I just love it that much!! mmmmm

Anonymous said...

I bet both of these delicious cobblers are outstanding! Yum!

Jessica Lee Binder said...

I already have a weakness for all berries and cherries, so I'm sure I wouldn't be able to choose either. I imagine this was very dangerous, sitting there eating a bite of one, then the other, then back to the first, then the second, A, B, A, B....can't decide, must keep eating...

Jenna said...

I love a good cobbler. I think both types look delish! And I would like a piece of both right now. For my breakfast. Yes.

Chef Fresco said...

Cobbler is my favorite!! Especially w. vanilla ice cream on top!

LilSis said...

Both versions look amazing to me! Please, do tell, who helps you eat all the amazing goodies that you make?

Cookie baker Lynn said...

Love that sloppy mess with the whipped cream (or is it ice cream) picture. But it all looks good.

Jacque said...

Mmmm, there's no such thing as a bad blueberry cobbler.

Yours both look fan-tab-ulous! Your lucky family :)

jillian said...

Yum, both versions look good especially with whipped cream

Michael said...

I am MUCH the same way and ALWAYS have to either combine recipes or make lots of versions.

Both look DELICIOUS!

Jaime said...

that happens to me all the time. good idea to try both :) i love cobbler

Lyndas recipe box said...

Both of these look luscious...I couldn't choose between them because i've never met a cobbler I didn't love! Great pictures, too!

Deborah said...

I wouldn't be able to decide either, so I'll take a piece of each!!

Jeanne said...

You're killing us here! But what a way to go, clobbered with cobblers...

Teanna said...

Hey, give them to me and I'll pick a winner! I actually just want an excuse to eat them both, though :)

kellypea said...

Nope. I wouldn't pick a winner either. And good think because I rarely have a go to for anything. If you're in the market for a pan licker for all your testing, just lemme know ; )

Hornsfan said...

I am certain you can't be faulted for making more than one cobbler!! They both look terrific :)
