What a shame that something as delightful as cookie dough would be contaminated by something as nasty as E. coli.
What great fortune that I can make my own cookie dough, and that I can eat it willy-nilly.
Rather than eating cookie dough straight out of the mixing bowl like a heathen (ah, who am I kidding, I do it all the time), I decided to take a more sophisticated route. I saw some oatmeal cookie balls on Deborah's wonderful blog Taste and Tell and thought they'd be the perfect quick-fix.
Indeed, these are great little bites. I followed Deborah's recipe pretty closely, and my only advice is this: Chill the dough very briefly before rolling it into balls--it makes the process much less messy.
One more bit of advice: Always make (and eat, neanderthal-style) your own cookie dough.
E. coli-Free Oatmeal Raisin Cookie Balls
(personalized from this recipe)
2 cups rolled oats
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon (clearly, all oatmeal raisin cookie replicas should contain cinnamon)
3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1 tablespoon water
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup butter, softened
2 tablespoons peanut butter
1 cup golden raisins, chopped
1 cup powdered sugar
In a large bowl, combine the oats, sugar, cinnamon, and cocoa. With clean hands, mix in the water, vanilla, butter, and peanut butter to form a dough. Add in the raisins.
Chill the dough briefly, then roll it into 1-inch balls. Roll the balls in powdered sugar until thickly coated. Pop into the fridge for at least 20 minutes before serving.

Ooh. I like the inclusion of just a little bit of peanut butter in these. And a little cocoa! They're like oatmeal cookie...plus
MMM, an oatmeal cookie ball sounds perfect. Unfortunately my children do not like raisins, but I can sub choc chips:) They look scrumptious!
If I'm good-like really, really good could you send me one? Or two or a dozen? ;)
Lately I've been making full batches of cookies, baking a couple, and freezing the remaining dough as cookies to bake as-wanted later. But what with the heat lately, I've just been eating the frozen blobs of raw cookie dough. Refreshing!
Great balls, Grace! I love the phrase "willy nilly". I don't think we use it enough. ;-D
I'm deathly allergic to raisins. If I left them out, do you think the balls would be too dry without the moistness the raisins add?
These sound too good to be true. No baking, and they're full of good stuff. And, they're pretty with the powdered sugar coating!
This is so yuummmy!! Grace, look fantastic!! Gloria
What an easy way to make cookies
Those oatmeal cookie balls just hit the right spot of deliciousness!!
Bring on the cookie dough sans raisin and e. coli! :)

I saw these, they look so good! Yeah, making cookie dough rocks because you can choose what eggs you put in :D.
Thats a great idea and it looks great too!
...." Always make (and eat, neanderthal-style) your own cookie dough"
LMAO! Great advice, yummy cookies!
Ick - I hadn't heard about this. Sometimes I buy it solely so my son can eat it for dessert. : ) Glad I haven't bought any recently!
I love your idea though. Make your own and you can't go wrong.
Michelle
Yes - I should have added cinnamon! I'm glad you made them and liked them!!
Love oatmeal cookies, these sound great with the addition of peanut butter and cinnamon! my favorite is chocolate chip cookie dough...
After all, what good is cookie dough if you can't nibble at it? How else will you know that the cookies will be first-rate? Added bonus: You can add your cookie dough to softened ice cream, and call it "Cookie dough ice cream"!
Oh my God. You're responsible for my growing hips.
What tastey little morsels!
Man is that ever gross about the Toll House Cookie DOugh. SO glad we dont buy that stuff.
Yum. I saw these as well and contemplated making them, but haven't gotten around to it yet. This must be a sign.
Oh, and I totally agree. Oatmeal cookies need a little warm cinnamon love. ;-)
Guilt free cookie dough?! What will you come up with next, my friend :)
Looks delicious as usual!
This sounds and looks delicious. I often think I eat more raw dough then I eat baked cookies.
Ohhh man so tempting! I love cookie dough & yours totally does look way better than the store bought kind :)
willy nilly cookie dough - sign me up!
I know, that was quite a scare. So OK, I get it. Only homemade dough- must admit the best dough I ever tasted was your snickerdoodle blondie dough. However, I am loving your adorable cookie ball- chock full of everything I like. And peanut butter too. Yum. (And by the way Grace, thank you for being so supportive on my blogsite. I really appreciate your comments!)
So these are not cooked? What a good idea, safe cookie dough :)
Great idea, as usual. Your Cookie Balls sound fun and fabulous!
you should have seen the weird looks I got when I excitedly told my friends about a recipe I'd seen for making cookies out of cookie dough. LOL!! So long as they were small I think they would be great.
Oh how yummy. And I am a life long batter eater.
Wow, I love it. These sound so good! I must have missed these on Deborah's blog.
Oh wow, how fabulous Grace!
I've always wondered why my cookie output never matches what it says on the recipe ... probably because I eat waaaayyyy too much of it before it ever leaves the mixing bowl. Um, how could I possible make cookie dough and not sample it? Do such people exist? How do they resist licking the spoon? Now I want some cookie dough. :-)
I ALWAYs make my own, but that's because I'm a snob and think my baking is the best. But now...I think you topped it with this awesome cookie ball! Pretty and fun to eat and delicious-sounding!
And..."willy-nilly"?!! HAHAHA!! That word is gonna be in my mouth for days now!
That recipe title cracks me up! I love cookie dough...I doubt I'll change my errant ways :)
Great looking dessert. Have a wonderful holiday!
Mmm delicious. I saw these on Deborah's blog and had already saved the recipe. Thanks for reminding me about them!
YUM - any kind of oatmeal cookie works for me! I love these!
Perfect...I love eating cookie dough and this is the safe way to do it :)
Totally loving this recipe Grace! Will have to make this with my little ones- yay no raw eggs!
Hehe--this one really made me giggle! E.coli-free indeed! Love it.
The only problem is that now I'd have to share my beloved cookie dough with my husband, who has always been scared of raw egg-containing dough ;)
I SO had to look at this post just because of the title! Glad I've found you...will definitely be back for more (germ free) ideas ;)
