What a shame that something as delightful as cookie dough would be contaminated by something as nasty as E. coli.


What great fortune that I can make my own cookie dough, and that I can eat it willy-nilly.

Rather than eating cookie dough straight out of the mixing bowl like a heathen (ah, who am I kidding, I do it all the time), I decided to take a more sophisticated route. I saw some oatmeal cookie balls on Deborah's wonderful blog Taste and Tell and thought they'd be the perfect quick-fix.

Indeed, these are great little bites. I followed Deborah's recipe pretty closely, and my only advice is this: Chill the dough very briefly before rolling it into balls--it makes the process much less messy.


One more bit of advice: Always make (and eat, neanderthal-style) your own cookie dough.

E. coli-Free Oatmeal Raisin Cookie Balls
(personalized from this recipe)

2 cups rolled oats
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon (clearly, all oatmeal raisin cookie replicas should contain cinnamon)
3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1 tablespoon water
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup butter, softened
2 tablespoons peanut butter
1 cup golden raisins, chopped
1 cup powdered sugar

In a large bowl, combine the oats, sugar, cinnamon, and cocoa. With clean hands, mix in the water, vanilla, butter, and peanut butter to form a dough. Add in the raisins.
Chill the dough briefly, then roll it into 1-inch balls. Roll the balls in powdered sugar until thickly coated. Pop into the fridge for at least 20 minutes before serving.

MMM, an oatmeal cookie ball sounds perfect. Unfortunately my children do not like raisins, but I can sub choc chips:) They look scrumptious!

Lately I've been making full batches of cookies, baking a couple, and freezing the remaining dough as cookies to bake as-wanted later. But what with the heat lately, I've just been eating the frozen blobs of raw cookie dough. Refreshing!

Great balls, Grace! I love the phrase "willy nilly". I don't think we use it enough. ;-D

I'm deathly allergic to raisins. If I left them out, do you think the balls would be too dry without the moistness the raisins add?

Ick - I hadn't heard about this. Sometimes I buy it solely so my son can eat it for dessert. : ) Glad I haven't bought any recently!

After all, what good is cookie dough if you can't nibble at it? How else will you know that the cookies will be first-rate? Added bonus: You can add your cookie dough to softened ice cream, and call it "Cookie dough ice cream"!

I know, that was quite a scare. So OK, I get it. Only homemade dough- must admit the best dough I ever tasted was your snickerdoodle blondie dough. you should have seen the weird looks I got when I excitedly told my friends about a recipe I'd seen for making cookies out of cookie dough. LOL!! So long as they were small I think they would be great.

I've always wondered why my cookie output never matches what it says on the recipe ... probably because I eat waaaayyyy too much of it before it ever leaves the mixing bowl. Um, how could I possible make cookie dough and not sample it? Do such people exist? How do they resist licking the spoon? Now I want some cookie dough. :-)
