I wish I could tell you that this post is about a dish created solely from the bounty of my garden but alas, I cannot. Yep, I'm probably the only person in the world who can't grow zucchini.
Since I've decided that those evil zucchini plants are a lost cause (and really only serve as a reminder of my failure, sitting out on my deck, looking pathetic), I gladly accepted this behemoth from a coworker:
(shown with a day's wages for sizing purposes)
The tomatoes that you see, however, are from my garden. At least my time, energy, and money haven't been completely wasted (knock on wood). I think they're particularly delicious, but there's a small chance that I'm biased.
I didn't do anything fancy here. I sliced, oiled, salted, peppered, thymed, and roasted. I really liked the thyme in the dish I made from Holler's blog, so it came back out for this. 'Twas a good choice, if I do say so myself.
It's hard to beat fresh-from-the-garden goodness, even if the majority of it is from someone else's garden. Eh, maybe next year...
Your maters are beautiful! And darn those zukes to heck if they won't grow. ;)
ReplyDeleteYou gotta admit, this is the time of the year to appreciate and enjoy the bounty of the garden or farmers markets .. if it is grown locally the taste is simply better.
ReplyDeleteGreat pics!
I say thumbs up for giving zukes a try in the garden, even if they didn't grow. Not a fan of zucchini but my mom made a recipe that was out of this world and changed me around. Let me know if you want it.
ReplyDeleteI don't know what maters are but they look cute! And I certainly hope you get more than $1.25 for a days wages! You definately deserve it.
ReplyDeleteIf I'm ever in NY, I'll bring puppies to your office. It makes the day go so much nicer.
Hey we can't all grow everything. :-D I love the pics.
ReplyDeleteThat zucchini is enormous! What are they feeding it? :P And you're ahead of me, I've never even tried to grow a zucchini!
ReplyDeleteOh I wished I could have a large garden! Those are beautiful, and so nicely photographed. :)
ReplyDeleteThese are gorgeous. I love when they're prepared so simply.
ReplyDeleteI'm impressed with anyone that can garden even if your zukes won't grow.
There's always the farmer's market and next year, right?
ReplyDeleteThe baked zukes and maters is perty tho!
Another thumbs up coming your way.. just love both the Z's & maters! My Z's have started, boy have they started coming... I'll be doing a midnight run soon leaving them at doorsteps... LOL!!
ReplyDeleteOh, thank gosh - I thought we were the only ones. My squash plants refuse to grow too. They just keep flowering.
ReplyDeleteBut the simple recipes are the best - yum!
Sweetie, if those zukes won't grow on your garden, it's their loss!
ReplyDeleteMmmm...! And the hell with those snobby zukes! :-)
ReplyDeleteMercy that looks good! Oven roasted is just about my favorite way to eat veggies. I was thinking of trying zukes next year, but someone told me I couldn't do it in a container. And your point is?? I plan on trying it anyway! Don't give up and give it a go again next year Grace. :)
ReplyDeleteDo not feel bad I cannot grow anything - I do not have a green thumb in fact all things planted hide from me!!
ReplyDeleteThese look great - Due to my lack of "planting" skills I am a farmers market girl!!
Cheers
Cathy

Yum, who cares whose garden it's from if it's this yummy!
ReplyDelete...oh, and I couldn't grow a zucchini to save my life, dudette!
i can't grow mint! hello? mint... the stuff that tries to take over the world from what everyone tells me. can't grow it.
ReplyDeleteYou aren't the only one - I have a monster pattypan plant on my deck that flowers like gangbusters but has yet to produce any fruit. Thank goodness for neighbors/coworkers!!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure it's not your bias; I'd bet my daily wages (oops, I'm a sahm, maybe the value of my daily work) that your tomatoes are fabulous. I'm still waiting for the zucchini to come since I planted the garden late this year and look forward to roasting them now.
ReplyDeleteI've always sauteed them or cooked them in a spicy korean soup so this will be a nice change.
I once saw in a book a suggestion to plant them in a bag of potting soil. If you have a bag large enough for two plants, cut two 'x's on both sides, leaving a strip of bag intact in the center to keep the sides from collapsing open. Then tuck the triangular flaps from the 'x's inside the bag and plant away. Perhaps it's worth a try. If not, someone is ALWAYS trying to get rid of surplus zucchinis and you will make someone's day by accepting them :)
Love the principle: take garden-fresh veggies, use some heat source to caramelize them (instead of boiling, like I did last week... oops), use herbs, and voila yumminess!
ReplyDeleteI need to get me a garden now that we've moved to a place with a yard. Until then, there's always farmer's markets.
My tomatoes are just starting to ripen. And I didn't think I'd get any zucchini, but I have one huge one growing!
ReplyDeleteYou are hysterical but this just gave me a great idea for dinner!
ReplyDeleteDon't be hard on yourself about the zucchini - I kind of suspected it would be challenging since they really do need a ton of space to spread. The tomatoes are fabulous. One day you will be a zucchini master, grasshoppah.
ReplyDeleteSimply lovely :) I BADLY need a garden of my own!
ReplyDeleteSimple roasted vegetables. There is nothing finer!
ReplyDeleteMy evil plant is cantaloupe so I will trade you? 6 years I have ended up with 2 of the little buggers. One tasted like well bad and the other bugs got to it before I could. The tomatoes look killer.
ReplyDeleteThis is the perfect simple easy dish for garden fresh. Get the whole experience without killing them.
veggies at they're finest grace. i always look forward to getting veggies from my friends who have bumper crops and start pulling they'er hair out trying to get rid of them. tomatoes are my favorite veggie, when we were kids we'd go visit our aunt and uncle in the country who in the summer always had a basket of tomatoes near the back door from the garden. we'd sit and eat tomatoes like apples from our hand.
ReplyDeleteLocal food is still local even if not from your back yard. And if it makes you feel any better, I've killed mint, which is supposed to be like a weed, lol. Looks good to me!
ReplyDeleteThat's some zuke! Your maters look delish. And yes, fresh from the garden is still fresh from the garden.
ReplyDeleteYou get points for trying to grow the zuke beasties! Your roasting idea is great and I like the spices you used to! Wonderful idea to roast some maters, too. Lookin' good!
ReplyDeleteThat zucchini looks good. It would be nice to have a garden with zucchini.
ReplyDeleteAhhh...veggies. Not a cake in sight. Bwhahahahaha! Nice maters, too. I'm jealous since mine come from the grocery store. I swear I'm going to pot some of them so I can have them too. As far as the zukes go, I grew them a hundred years ago and SWEAR that they were the size of my forearm. I used to split them and stuff them. Totally excellent.
ReplyDeleteFresh vegetables are best when they are simply prepared. These look great.
ReplyDeletesimple..and healthy!!Yum
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments today on my Daring Bakers Challange and my Apple Cake. I ate half the cake! Seriously..half the cake my self!!!
Oh, delicious. Simple and perfect! You could make a stellar BLT with those maters...and if you do, I wanna see it. Yum!
ReplyDeleteI love your photos~
ReplyDeleteI think your zukes might be related to my romas. I have this huge roma tomato plant and not a single tomato. All the other plants have yielded fruit except this one. Your yellow tomatoes are a gorgeous shade of yellow!
ReplyDeleteNevermind, the tomatoes look brilliant.
ReplyDeleteyumm.! roasted veggies are amazing. im sure your tomatoes are extra delicious... and if your zucchinis would cooperate... they'd probably be extra good too!
ReplyDeleteWell, I can't grow veggies either, but hey at least you can grow tomatoes! The only thing I can grow perfectly is weeds.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if I'll ever have the gardening bug, I doubt it. My idea of the perfect garden is walking thru the produce section of Whole Foods or local farmers market.
Nope. I'm right there with you. I can't even grow a basil plant. A deck on the 25th floor with lots of wind kills absolutely everything in its path. Everything. So don't feel bad.
ReplyDeleteGrace, you are not the only person in the world. I can't grow anything ;(
ReplyDeleteThe dish looks delicious!
I don't grow Zucchini either and my tomatoes, last year were pretty tasteless, so you are one up on me :)
ReplyDeleteThese look so delicious!!
ReplyDeleteTomatoes are way harder to grow then zuc's so you win!
I love veggies with out alot of dolling up, Mother Nature does pretty good all on her own, don'tcha think?
Great veg pictures.
ReplyDeleteI like how they're at eye level.
I wish I had a garden (it's pretty impossible in Manhattan) but I'm pretty sure I'd be a complete failure at it.
ReplyDeleteWow! I love that tomoato picture! No green thumb here. Looks like you can grown some nice tomatoes!
ReplyDeleteI tagged you for a music meme on my blog!
Your tomatoes look gorgeous! They more than make up for the zucchini. If it makes you feel any better, though, my zucchini were a total bust. I had tons of flowers and then - nada! The plants just started to shrivel up and die. :(
ReplyDeleteWell, I haven't got a garden so I'll have to hop to the store and get me some veggies! I want to make this right now! :)
ReplyDeletebaby, i cant grow a thing! hmm...i think it's probably because i don't hv a garden LOL
ReplyDeleteme and potted plants didn't hv much fate living together either. i've killed almost every single species of plants from hong kong's price edward flower market :p
Simple but delicious...the best way to have the zukes and maters prepared. I need to be added to the list of those who can't grow zucchini. Your photos are gorgeous!
