The recent abundance of natural disasters has inspired me to determine how I would and should handle such events if they happened to me and my family.
When I talk about my family, I mean ALL of us. Marleau is definitely a part of our family, and I can't imagine ever leaving him behind unless absolutely necessary. That said, there are things we can do to protect our pets during events like hurricanes, floods, fires, and tornadoes.
First, be sure to designate a safe location that will accommodate your entire family, including the four-legged members, in case of a hurricane or tornado. A windowless room nearest to the ground floor is recommended, and try to keep a spare crate for each animal there if you have them. Second, do drills with everyone, including those critters, so they'll be somewhat used to the upset in their routine. Also, know where your pets' hiding spots are, so you can grab them and take them to safety as quickly as possible.
Make sure to have on hand a photo and description of your pet should you get separated, as well as proof of ownership, contact information for your vet, and medical records. Keep your pet as close to you as possible! If it turns out that you do need to evacuate, verify that all of your pets are wearing collars and tags with up-to-date identification. Also be informed about places that can provide services for animals too when a natural disaster hits if you have nowhere else to go.
Finally, keep an emergency kit stashed for your pet. Include things like a first aid kit, water, food, leashes, ID tags, and items that bring comfort (for Marleau, it's one of my husbands worn T-shirts). Food is key--most of us have food stashed for ourselves in case of emergency, but you'll need some for your pet too! Nature's Recipe dry dog food has a 35-year history of premium recipes made with high quality ingredients. They use no poultry by-product meal and the foods are made with added vitamins and minerals.
While this premium dog food was previously sold only at pet specialty stores, you can now find it at your local grocery store (I got it at Food Lion).
Nature's Recipe makes food that Marleau loves, and I love it because it's good for him! His tail does a lot of work, so I'm glad I can help "fuel the wag", even in the midst of a natural disaster! Great tips, Grace. Marleau is a FIT and handsome boy!
ReplyDeleteThat video of him eating the food is the cutest! #client
ReplyDeleteI've been driving around with extra dog food and a kennel in my car ever since some wildfires in SoCal a few years ago; I live in fear of needing to evacuate and not having enough food for my fur baby. Thank you for listing the other things I need to keep nearby in addition to the food. I wouldn't have thought of medical records. Give Marleau a pat from me!
ReplyDeleteGreat tips! Our pups look so much alike. :)
ReplyDeleteMarleau is adorable! Has baby Eva found him yet? And what does he think of her? We have always had a plan for "just-in-case" and it paid off just short of 2 years ago, when the house fire I thought could never happen did. Having a plan makes it easier to deal with whatever strikes, especially once babies and pets are involved. Good for you thinking about it during your sleep-deprived new mom phase.
ReplyDeleteA great reminder of just how much we should prepare, especially in these times when it seems like "just in case'' is becoming more just a question of "when'' instead.
ReplyDeleteI just wrote a massive blog post about my 16 year old dog who we put to sleep a few days ago. I'm so depressed and it's amazing how much a part of the family dogs become. :'( Hug your pup extra for me <3
ReplyDeleteGreat tips, that really should be on our mind more than they are!
ReplyDeleteMarleau is really just to cute :)
Marleau is so cute, I shall pray for no more disasters this year, I think we have all suffered enough.
