corns, calluses, and another giveaway

Whose idea was it to name those terrible knobs that arise on our feet after one of the most extraordinary vegetables in the world? What an insult.

I understand that they're just callused skin, but they sure can be gross. Don't get me wrong--I can appreciate a callus, which in many cases is associated with hard work. Corns, however, seem to simply be indicative of wearing shoes that don't fit properly. Where's the glory in that?

I was recently asked to review Miss Kay's Duck Commander Kitchen: Faith, Family, and Food--Bringing Our Home to Your Table,a great cookbook by Kay Robertson, a star of Duck Dynasty on A&E. I was particularly excited about this one, mostly because one of the dudes on the show bears a somewhat striking resemblance to my stepdad:

This cookbook is great--the recipes are extremely doable and several are actually ones that I already know, use, and love. There are terrific pictures of food and Miss Kay's family, as well as tips and interesting anecdotes scattered throughout. So since corn is one of my favorite vegetables and deserves some positive associations, when I saw Kay's recipe for cheesy corn casserole, I knew I'd be featuring it for this post. My very favorite version of corn pudding is super similar, and Kay's version didn't disappoint.*

*My oven, though, did decide to let me down. The bottom element burnt out about 5 minutes in, but we were patient (or as patient as possible when food is involved) and eventually got a cooked casserole.

The reason for this giveaway is to promote the partnership between Clayton Homes and Miss Kay’s designer kitchen, which was designed with Kay Robertson as inspiration. It includes a farmhouse sink, gooseneck faucet with retractable sprayer, decorative range hood, deluxe backsplash at range, upgraded lighting and a kitchen island upgrade available with certain models. As Miss Kay says, "I love it when my family is gathered under one roof. What we say around her is food will fill the belly, but love will fill the home. And [Clayton Homes] knows the difference between a house and a home."

You can find Clayton Homes on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and YouTube.

The fantastic package that I'm giving away includes a cast iron skillet, a rolling pin, a butcher block, various cooking utensils, a pot holder, an ice cream scoop, a pizza cutter, an apron, and a throw blanket. That's $300 worth of stuff! To enter, leave a comment on this post telling me a famous person you've been told you resemble. You can also like A Southern Grace on Facebook, follow A Southern Grace on Twitter, follow A Southern Grace on Pinterest, and/or tweet about the giveaway. Let me know about each action in a different comment, and be sure to leave an email address if necessary. I'll close the comments in one week, on Thanksgiving Day (11/28), and randomly pick the winner, who'll be contacted immediately. As a reminder, you can also still enter my Hickory Farms giveaway. Good luck, ya'll!

Disclaimer: Though I did receive the cookbook free of charge, the thoughts and opinions above are strictly my own.

  3. Another GREAT give-away Grace and the book sounds pretty cool too, as does that cheesy corn casserole.

I happen to think corn is highly under rated. Although, I do hope the corn callous association hasn't been the cause.

I have two celebrity identities. According to some, I'm a dead ringer for Sally Fields and supposedly sing like Cyndi Lauper. lol...

    Thanks for sharing, Grace...

  39. At least once a year, someone tells me I look like Jamie Lee Curtis. Most recently, it was one of my son's classmates: "You look like that lady in that movie, 'Freaky Friday.'" It's gotta be the hair, because I'm not thin, nor do I have big boobs.
