61

Not only is 61* the title of a lovely movie about the 1961 baseball season and the number of homers Roger Maris hit to break Babe Ruth's record that year (I only know this because I'm a huge Barry Pepper fan and because both of my brothers love baseball), but it's also the number of amazing entries I received for "Beat the Heat."

(Wowza, look at the forearm on that one! Yes, I like baseball, too, but for different reasons. But I digress...)

To say that I'm in awe of the turnout would be an understatement. I want to thank each and every person who sent me an entry--you've helped make this more fun than I ever could've anticipated! I'll have the roundup posted just as soon as I can.

To tide you over, please take a gander at what happens to items that don't beat the heat:

(the shriveled sticks you see before you used to be baby carrots)

Why I continue to crank up my oven to 400 degrees in this weather is beyond me.

Have a great weekend!

  4. We are currently having Fall-like weather after the heat and humidity I am lovin it!

I baked yesterday, I will bake today and maybe for the next few days, gotta get some bread put up in the freezer before the heat returns (and it will).

    Congrats on the entries !!

  8. Just to let you know, I came up with one for giggles this morning. It won't count for the contest, but I think you'll get a kick out of it. Have fun sorting through all those entries!

  9. It was a terrific idea, Grace, so I was glad to get involved! I finally cranked up my oven today, but only for 10 minutes, which is pretty lame when you think about it since it takes 20 to preheat. Can't wait for the round up....poor carrots.

  10. Wow, 61 entries! I can't wait to see the round-up! It's still not too hot around these parts so I've been cranking up the oven myself, just in case the temps go up and I haven't had time to bake anything! :)

  14. Glad it was such a resounding success! I too have been known to roast, broil and otherwise heat up my kitchen on an already hot day. I'm with ya.

  16. I find myself using my grill more and more as an oven during the summer months to compensate for my sad air conditioning (it needs all the help it can get). Can't wait to see the roundup!

  19. We must all be nuts Grace, I had my oven to 425 then broiled another dish and set off the fire alarm. It was just 90 plus degrees outside today. Will I do it again, you bet.
