A Southern Grace: bugs on a boomerang

bugs on a boomerang

Yum

Not to be confused with ants on a log.

As a kid, my experience with celery was pretty much limited to that popular peanut-butter-filled and raisin-toppped snack or seeing the stalks in a basket of wings (though at the time, I couldn't understand why anyone would want to replace the taste of wings and ranch with that of celery). Fortunately, I've learned to enjoy it in other capacities, and when I saw a rare recipe with celery as the star, I decided I needed to give it a try.

I should note that it seems as though someone has flipped a switch inside my brain, as all of a sudden, I can't get enough soy sauce into my mouth. I've been actively searching for recipes that call for it, and I've been adding it to dishes in which a reasonable person would say it doesn't belong. I'm not sure what's happened, but I'm not opposed to it at all!

Roosters!

I liked this as a side dish, but I also liked it as a topping on a salad. There are great flavors, and never fear--that awesome crunch of celery remains intact.

Hot & Cold Celery
(printable recipe)
Slightly adapted from this recipe
Ingredients:
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon red chili flakes
  • 4-5 large celery stalks, sliced thinly on an angle (about 2-1/2 cups)
Directions:
Stir together the soy sauce, sesame oil, vinegar, sugar, and pepper flakes in a medium bowl until sugar dissolves.
Add the celery and toss to coat it in the dressing.
I recommend refrigerating for an hour or so before eating.

Celery is the only thing that I'm not crazy for but I'd definitely try it just because I live in hope! :D

Well, first of all, your puppy's not a puppy anymore! What a cutie.
Absolutely broke out laughing at your post title and so true. :)
Lots of yummy ingredients here and, like you, never have been a celery eater, but I'm going to have to make this.

I've never heard this title so I was intrigued! This year we'll be growing celery for the first time so I'm going to try this recipe! Thanks for sharing.

PS. Cute puppy!

PSS. I love your glass bowl!

I've never served celery as the star of a recipe... I am liking this idea! My son LOVES anything with soy sauce so I know he will love it.

Your pup seriously looks so much like my Gracie girl. What a cutie.

Great idea! I like celery, but you're right, it's never the star of the show. And the side by side comparisons of your puppy are great. She's a fine looking dog.

I've never been able to say that I like celery. At most, I can tolerate it. However.... You have never led me astray on flavor choices, so I should try this.
Looks like your pup is smoking a pipe :)

Only celery? It's not enough for me.

Even for me, this is just too healthy, Grace. I love celery, esp. when stirfried with sliced beef :-))

This recipe sounds delicious and I will definitely try it as a side dish. Like you mentioned, it really is a rare recipe that let's celery be the star. And I'm the weirdo that likes celery... alot!

I also like celery! The crunch is awesome and holds up so well. But it does throw people for a loop. There was an episode of Top Chef where someone had to use celery and they were like, whaaaaat?

I keep celery on hand and use it in a variety of dishes, but have never make it the "star" of the dish. Will def. give this a try!
Your little friends are adorable!
