A Southern Grace: you're getting sleepy...

January 8, 2009

you're getting sleepy...

Yum

Hypnotic, yes?

The only thing I don't like about the candy you see above is that it looks like it might be an unrisen cinnamon roll. Talk about misleading. Talk about false advertising. Imagine my disappointment when I discover that, sadly, it contains no cinnamon whatsoever.

Now that that’s out of the way, you should know that although this candy a bit of a beast to make, the final result is quite delicious. Is that any surprise, considering that it consists of butter, sugar, and peanut butter? I think not. When I spotted these on Robin Sue’s blog Big Red Kitchen, I bookmarked it immediately, and when my dear grandma mentioned a spiral-shaped, peanut-butter-containing treat from her younger days, I knew I had to make it for her.

The primary mistake one should avoid in making this is adding too much milk too quickly (and yes, I speak from experience). If you accidentally do this, you must compensate by adding more sugar and making use of your fridge.

Although it wasn't exactly what she had in mind, my grandmother was thrilled with the candy, so thanks Robin Sue!

Oooh very mysterious and hypnotising. I thought it was a caramel filling!

And you cannot go wrong with those ingredients :)

peanut butter? even better--oh yes. these look bite-size, which is very dangerous. any left? do they taste like a meltaway? I'm sitting here trying to figure out how they taste with my boring morning coffee.

Yay you did make them! Oh yes on the milk- the first time I made them I had to add a ton of sugar to make up for the too much milk I had added. Yes a bit of a pain to make but I agree- they are sooooo good! Thanks for the link!

These look addictive! Don't let me try them. It could be dangerous.

OH GRACE! You don't realize what you've done to me. I grew up making a similar version called potato candy (with the peanut butter and sugar. I acutally don't know why it's called potato candy but it's German.) Now I've got to make this.

looks difficult and messy! :) glad it was you taking this on and not me.

You made me laugh with the hypnotic analogy. The sugar of course will do anything but put you to sleep. It sounds very interesting. I've promised I'm not trying any new sweets for at least ...uhmm....well....tomorrow ok?

It did me me sleepy! Yikes! But how yummy. That lucky gramma.

What an interesting candy! Am I wrong in believing that you actually followed the recipe and DIDN'T add any cinnamon to this, .. because I thought we were Chad Allen AND Cinnamon soul sisters!

This looks really pretty! Cinnamon could be added, no?

Albany Jane said...

Aww, I can't see any pictures. Darn, cause it sounds so good. I'm thinking the same as linda, too - why not add just a smidge of cinnamon?

I must admit, I was a little excited when I saw the picture because I did think they were going to be cinnamon rolls! Glad it was candy though and not like a rolled chicken breast or something. :)

I got to your site through FoodGawker and when I read the comments I had to jump in. When I saw the photo, I also thought it was "potato candy". An old boyfriend's mother used to make this at Christmas and gave me her recipe. All it takes is a boiled, mashed potato, powdered sugar, and peanut butter. As I recall, when you mix the sugar and mashed potato together it forms a dough that can actually get fairly liquid until you add enough sugar. You would never believe there is a potato in there. I found a recipe on Allrecipes that you might want to check out: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Mables-Potato-Cookies/Detail.aspx. Maybe this is what your grandmother is thinking about.

I am always up for PB! What a great sweet treat!

You know, I think a little powdered cinnamon added to the sugar for the fondant would be a Good Thing. Although these look wonderful as they are.

May not have cinnamon but they do have peanut butter which is a good thing in my book!

I too thought it was Potato Candy. My grandmother lived in Eastern KY and always made sure she had Potato Candy for us when we visited - good stuff. -Mary

Ann said...

Seriously, I thought it was a cinnamon roll w/ glaze, just like you said!

Jaime said...

hmmmm... you've got me so curious as to how this tastes. that's a lot of sugar and butter!

Cara said...

At first glance, I thought this was potato candy. I've never tried this recipe, but potato candy is delicious! It is a little hard to get the consistency of the dough right, and it's a bit of a hassle to make, but believe me it's worth it! And the best part? I always sprinkle a combination of nutmeg and cinnamon over the peanut butter before I roll it up! Or you can add it after you slice it, on top.
